ILLEGAL MONEY LENDING
Illegal money lending is a very serious offence in Singapore. Both fines and imprisonment are the punishment for a single contravention of the Moneylenders Act.
Section 14 of the Moneylenders Act states that:
- Companies may be fined not less than $50,000 and not more than $500,000;
- Individuals who are first-time offenders are fined not less than $30,000 and not more than $300,000 and with imprisonment for a term not more than 4 years;
- Second or subsequent offenders are fined not less than $30,000 and not more than $300,000 and with imprisonment for a term not more than 7 years
